WordPress Release Features – A Lookback

WordPress has grown very popular recently, but its roots and development go back to 2001. This is a mature and stable CMS platform/blog engine. WordPress was born out of the desire for an easy to use and robust personal publishing system built on PHP and MySQL and licensed under the GPL. It has grown in its importance and is now a major candidate for a lot of business and community websites.

  • 2001 – b2cafelog launched(Michel Valdrighi).
  • 2003 – fork b2 and create wordpress.
  • 2004 – Introduced Plugins
  • 2005 – Theme system, new user role system, new backend UI and static pages introduced in version 2.0.
  • 2007 – New UI, autosave, spell check and lots of new features introduced in version 2.1 (ella).
  • 2008 – Version 2.5(Brecker) released containing new administration UI design, dashboard widget system and short code API.
  • 2009 – Version 2.8 (baker) released containing built-in theme installer and improved widget UI and API.
  • 2010 – Version 3.0 (thelonious) released has the new features like: custom post types, custom menu management and multiple site management.
